Pediatric Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Kids have pelvic floors too, and we are here to help them take control! Let’s talk about it…

What does pediatric pelvic floor dysfunction look like?

Our pelvic floors are responsible for many things, including sphincter control (being able to control when voiding urine and passing stool) and organ support. When kids have issues with their pelvic floors, it usually comes in the form of constipation, bed-wetting, potty training difficulties, or urinary or fecal incontinence. Although this can happen to anyone, these issues can be more likely for children with a history of urologic, gastroenteric, or neurologic conditions. Our therapists are here to help with whatever needs your child may need!

How do we help?

Pelvic floor physical therapy looks very different for children and young people than it does for adults.

We first assess functional movement and milestones, food and fluid intake, bladder & bowel habits, any challenges in daily life, and more, depending on the child and their needs. Many times, a non-invasive (external) assessment of the pelvic floor muscles may be beneficial to ensure they are working properly.

Following the assessment, we work with the family to identify ways to functionally address the issues you are experiencing, in a way that is tangible for your family. To make it more feasible for the child, we look at ways to help through play. However at it’s foundation we are targeting fluid and food intake, core strength and muscle coordination, positioning, sensory-based complications, and recommendations for daily routines.
